Kentucky Route 32 is a popular road with riders and the fall is the best time to sample it.
This past weekend, I took advantage of the fine weather to take my last motorcycle camping trip of the year, this time choosing to visit Eastern Kentucky. I pitched my tent at Jenny Wiley State Park near Prestonsburg and passed the weekend exploring, riding, sightseeing and, of course, photographing, so I’ll have material for a touring story that will show up in Rider magazine at some point. But for now, here’s a selection of photos as a sort of preview, not to mention a farewell to another summer of riding.

This time of year, the days can be comfortably warm in the 70s, but the nights can be cool. One night dropped to 39 degrees, with chilly fog filling the “holler” where my tent was pitched and testing my limits for camping.
Just like in small towns across the country, people yak outside the Post Office in Benham, Kentucky. Judging from the old firehouse, Benham has always been a one-horse town, and that horse used to work for the fire department.

The town of West Liberty was nearly destroyed in March by a tornado so strong it even tore up brick buildings like this bank. Seven months later, the town is still trying to rebuild.
